Board Recruitment

Welcome from Kirsten Major, Chief Executive Officer

Dear Candidate

Thank you for your interest in Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and this fantastic opportunity to become our new Director of People.  Covid-19 has placed a significant and enduring demand on our dedicated workforce and there has never been a more critical time for a talented and compassionate leader to join our Executive team as our new Director of People.  I am looking for a leader to complement our high performing unitary Board and provide leadership in all aspects of people services working in partnership with a workforce that spans a huge diversity of professional groups.  The pandemic has created opportunities for transformation and innovation in our service delivery and we need to build on new ways of working we have learnt; however, I am extremely conscious of the lasting impact it has had on my colleagues and I am committed to ensuring that we support the wellbeing of our workforce as they address the wider health and care implications for our patients and populations.

We are one of the UK’s largest and most successful NHS Foundation Trusts, employing 18,000 staff across our 5 hospitals and our community services and with a turnover of £1.1 billion.  We are an innovator in medical research, and this includes hosting the Yorkshire region’s Clinical Research Network on behalf of the National Institute for Healthcare Research.

Our vision captures the breadth and depth of our impact on our patients and population: ‘To be recognised as the best provider of health, clinical research and education in the UK and a strong contributor to the aspiration of Sheffield to be a vibrant and healthy city region’.  We play a significant civic leadership role in the city of Sheffield and across the City Region, working particularly closely with the city’s two Universities. We are also an important partner within the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw health and care system working with colleagues in other providers and commissioners to create an integrated approach that is focused on the future health, wellbeing, and prosperity of the vibrant and diverse populations that we serve.

We are a values-led organisation and our dedicated workforce demonstrate these values every day.  Our PROUD values exist to support us in our work to improve health and well-being, to support people to keep well, to get better when they are ill and, when they cannot fully recover, to stay as well as they can to the end of their lives.

If you are seeking a role where you can build on a strong platform of robust people services and take these to a world-class level, then I am keen to hear from you.  I believe that this role requires an inspirational and progressive leader with experience at Board level in a comparable and complex, customer-centric environment.  An individual who can create a framework that supports all our workforce to fulfil their potential.  Your engaging style will allow you to quickly build credibility, generate fresh ideas and spark innovation within the Trust as well as with a broad range of external stakeholders.  This is a unique opportunity to make your mark in a successful, values-driven organisation at the most important moment in the history of the NHS and to help us to achieve our ambitions.

I hope that our values and our vision inspire you to take a close look at us and to consider an application.  Please contact Carmel Bell or Emma Pickup on  07917 826639 for an initial conversation.

I look forward to meeting you during the process.
